Treatment Options For Erectile Dysfunction

By Musa S.

Erectile dysfunction has become very common among adult men and young men who are sexually active. This topic as a problem keeps gaining more attention and it has come to my notice that even though this topic is very popular over the net, it is not very much popular in the clinics practically; this is because Many affected men feel ashamed or shy to go for health consult and this tend to worsen the condition as depression may set in due to fear of unsatisfactory sexual performance with a female partner.

Erection occurs as a result of blood flow into the penile erectile tissue, any defect in the cascade leading to activation of blood flow into the penis could cause erectile dysfunction; Read up my post on ERECTILE DYSFUNCTION. Erectile dysfunction treatment is based on the cause. This means that psychotherapy like counselling of partners can be used as intervention if the cause is psychological but if there is an underlined disease condition patients can benefit from controlling the disease condition also from various drugs designed to assist the males to achieve a better erection and they are mostly targeted toward increasing blood flow to the penis.

The various treatment for erectile dysfunction is what we will be discussing today, so let's get started

these form of treatment is given firstly to patients with psychogenic erectile dysfunction. This means that it is given to those patients whose erection problem is as a result of psychological disturbances like stress, anxiety, fear of performance or even depression. It is a counseling processes which involves a health professional giving patients various strategies to avoid many events that may lead to intolerable stress, anxiety and even depression to help enhance their sexual experience, so proper rest and being calm are one of the emphasis in the advises. Most times psychotherapy works best when both partners are invited for the counselling to help them understand the importance of proper communication. Some males notice erectile dysfunction whenever they change sexual partner as a result of performance anxiety and their performance increases with subsequent sexual exposure with that partner. seen that erectile problems become reduced In the absence of stress and other psychological disturbances.

Oral medication has been a successful erectile dysfunction treatment for many men. These drugs are designed to enhance blood flow to the penis helping the male attain a stronger erection and they include; Sildenafil (viagra),  Vardenafil (levitra),  Tadalafil (cialis, tadalis). These medications work in much the same way. These drugs enhance the effects of nitric oxide, a natural chemical your body produces that relaxes muscles in the penis (read Erectile Dysfunction). This increases blood flow and allows you to get an erection in response to sexual stimulation. These medications are different in dosage, their duration of action (how long they work; Tadalafil is the longest acting and Sildenafil is shortest acting) and their side effects. Your doctor takes into account your particular situation to determine which medication may work best. These drugs cause side effects such as hypotension (they are sometimes used for treating pulmonary arterial hypertension, so do not combine these medications with your antihypertensive drugs), blurred vision (sometimes blue colors problems due to activity against PDE6 in retina; common with viagra) and headache. These side effects are not too pronounced and are tolerable and they differ base on the drug.

Other medications for erectile dysfunction include:

Alprostadil self-injection: With this method, you use a fine needle to inject alprostadil (Alprostadil, Caverject) into the base or side of your penis. In some cases, medications generally used for other conditions are used for penile injections on their own or in combination. Example's include; papaverine, alprostadil and phentolamine. Each injection generally produces an erection in five to about 20 minutes that lasts about an hour. Because the needle used is very fine, pain from the site of injection is usually minor. Side effects can include bleeding from the injection, prolonged erection and formation of fibrous tissue at the injection  site.

Testosterone replacement: Some men have erectile dysfunction as a result of low levels of testosterone hormone and may need testosterone replacement therapy.
NOTE: testosterone replacement therapy works only if the erectile dysfunction is caused by testosterone.

Alprostadil penis suppository: an intraurethral therapy which involves placing a tiny alprostadil suppository (MUSE) inside the penis. A  special applicator is to used to insert the suppository about two inches  down into the penis. Side effects can include pain, minor bleeding in  the urethra, dizziness and formation of fibrous tissue inside the penis.
Penis pump: surgery can be used to place a vacuum constrictor device (uses battery) in the penis. This help to gain erection when ever you want to have sex.

Some habits may cause or worsen erectile dysfunction in men, which if controlled can help improve the condition. These include smoking (should be stopped), alcohol ingestion (should be stopped), weight control (if you have excessive fat, it may build up in your blood vessels causing low blood flow), try and settle out relationship issues (figure out a better communication pattern with your partner)
